Time

After catching the highly acclaimed "The Time Traveller’s Wife", I decided to discuss about time.

Indeed, time is a concept that many people have tried to grasp. Some say time is a 4th dimension, where events occur in sequences, while others postulate that time is neither an event nor a thing, and thus is not itself measurable nor can it be travelled. For myself, I am more inclined to believe that time is a measurement of change; it provides a yardstick for us to carry out our activities and plan for the future.

Consider a ball bouncing on the ground. The observation of the ball bouncing shows that time passes, the displacement of the ball changes. However, if we move in the same velocity of the ball, the change in displacement of the ball cannot be observed, and time to us seems to be still. Hence, time can be said to have stopped when everything in the world has the same velocity, in other words, stop moving or appear to have stopped moving. As such, when nothing changes, time would no longer hold any significance.

Many people are obsessed with trying to find more time to do things. However, the crux of the issue is not about having more time, it is to have more change. By engaging in more activities, moving with the pace of others, we are more inclined to believe that we have spent less time. Change itself is a function of time, and time should not be isolated from change. We have to focus on moving forwards in order to make our lives meaningful, rather than to ponder upon time.

Snake and Ladders

Snake and Ladders has been always one of my favorite childhood games. This classical board game may look simple and childish but holds a deeper meaning when we analyse it in detail.

The aim of Snake of Ladders is to get your piece from the starting point (square number 1) to the ending point (square number 100). In the process of doing so, players have to roll a six-sided dice and move their piece a number of squares foward corrosponding to the number obtained from the die. Players aim to reach the ending point to win the game.

I like to perceive this game as a game of life. Life has a starting point (when we are born) and ending point (when we die) and people have no choice but to move fowards to the ending point as the numbers on the dice are positive. However, the journey that every different person takes are very much different. This can be attributed to the element of random when a dice is thrown to determine the number of steps to move foward.

Next comes the part about the ladders and snakes. Ladders are shortcuts where we can go through to reach our destination sooner. Snakes provide a path where we end up further back than we were before. Every decision we make is like throwing a dice, it can bring us nearer to our destination, or bring us further back, where we have to start all over again.

The main point is not to be disheartened over moving backwards because of encountering a "snake", but to always remember that there is always a chance to throw the dice in next turn that would bring us yet nearer to the goal. Sometimes, we just have to take a step backwards to move fowards.

As such, I look foward to my next turn in this game of Snake and Ladders.

"time flies while you're having fun"

Time flies. Just a while ago, I was still thinking about how the real JC lessons are going to start but now, one term has passed and the March holidays arrived. So much has happened over these few weeks until I have the time to post on this journal. Some highlights in chronological order:

Birthdays
The class celebrated Cassandra, Hsing Ying, Yin Hwee, Yu Bin and my birthday by buying a cake and throwing a mini party at the class bench and taking lame photos. Special thanks to the Welfare Reps for their effort in organising their first event and the class for sending in 78 birthday SMSes on that day =)

Post Orientation Party
The highlight of POP was the Faculty Dance Competition. Everybody was training hard almost everyday after lessons to prepare for this dance performance. All faculties danced well but in the end Apollo won. This was preceded by the standard mass dance, song, and photo-taking sessions. The POP was a testament to the awesome class spirit of 7G that sort of “infected” the whole Apollo and henceforth the cohort. This kind of things work this way ><

STJ @Sentosa
Went Sentosa for STJ. Although the weather was not as good as expected, we still enjoyed ourselves by playing Frisbee, beach volleyball, captain's ball in the wet weather. The seniors even took the effort to buy Subway meals from Vivo and carry it to Sentosa as part of their treat. Their effort and generosity in planning the STJ even as their Block Tests were round the corner, was indeed commendable. Looks like we have to work harder for our JTS =)

Council
Running for council. Although there are a crazy number of people running for council in Apollo compared to other faculties, I believe that no task is too difficult to complete. Do give us (Sarah Koh, Sarah Por, Lay Eng, and myself) support in our campaign =) We will deliver.

This concludes Term 1 of JC1 apart from the lectures, tutorials, tests and interviews. I hope that term 2 would be more fulfilling. On a side note, our class really has a lot of "BJD" people (especially the girls). As time goes by, who knows what interesting secrets we might uncover? XD

Start of a New Chapter

Tomorrow is officially the beginning of JC lessons, and I can expect lots of homework to be done, notes to study, as well as tests to prepare for. It would be where the next journey begins, all the way until the A-levels.

After an exciting and explosive orientation, REV-IT-UP, where lasting friendships were fostered; the awesome finale of the campfire, its time to get serious and focus on real JC life. I was impressed by the enthusiasm and unity of my class; how they overcame the odds to produce the winning CT flag as well as a respectable class percussion performance for the campfire. Although we come from different backgrounds, I believe that 09S7G would be able to face up to new challenges and complete this arduous journey =).
